Happy New Year! It’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that we are in a new decade. It was a bittersweet moment for me when the clock struck midnight. There were a lot of memorable milestones and experiences in this past decade! I finished high school, got my first job, started this blog, graduated from university, met my boyfriend of 3 years, travelled to many new places and made some fantastic friends along the way. I can even pinpoint the moments where I feel that I started to grow as an individual.
As a result of my first few jobs, I became a lot more independent and confident and turned into a bit of an extrovert who no longer had socializing problems. When I left North America for the first time and travelled to Japan & Taiwan, I got to experience and learn about cultures that I knew nothing about! It was fascinating and, to this day, still holds the top spot on my list of favourite life experiences! Since then, I’ve become more knowledgeable about the world around me and thoroughly enjoy learning about the histories of different countries. There are still so many places on my travel bucket list that I want to visit, and I can’t wait to start planning some trips for this year!
Aside from travelling, there are a few other things on my priority list for the new year. Continuing to live a positive, happy and healthy lifestyle is at the top of my list. As I reflect on the past decade and begin to think about my resolutions for this year, I remind myself that resolutions need to be realistic. Too often, people set impossible goals and exhaust themselves trying to achieve them.
With all that in mind, here are some of my New Year’s Resolutions:
My New Year’s Resolutions for 2020:
Live In The Moment
In this world of social media, it’s easy to get wrapped up in always trying to capture every moment on camera. This year, I want to make an effort to reduce the amount of time I spend staring at screens and documenting every part of my life. As much as I love photography and taking photos, when I look back and reflect on memories, I want to remember my reactions and the way I felt during that time rather than remember how difficult it was to get the perfect lighting or find the right angles for the photo I took that day.
More Experiences, Less Things
With the constant onslaught of ads directed to me, I’ve become more aware of the trap of consumerism and will be making an effort to reduce the impact that materialism has on my life. Buying for the sake of buying has never been a good idea, yet somehow we are always made to feel that we need things when in reality, we don’t. Instead, I’d like to put that money towards experiences that I can fondly look back to and remember.
Make Time For Hobbies
Time to wave goodbye to hustle culture. While it’s great to have business goals and projects, not every minute of every day needs to be dedicated to them. This year I want to get back to doing things that are just FUN. I want to learn how to knit, read more books, try out different crafts, and so much more! Life is so much more enjoyable when you spend time doing things that make you happy!
Learn A New Language
If it isn’t evident by now, I have an obsession with travelling. When I travel to a new place, I love to immerse myself in the culture! That includes everything from history, language and food to fashion, art and music! I have been lucky enough to visit Japan twice in the past two years and have deemed it my favourite place to travel! There is still so much more that I would like to see there, and I would love to communicate better with the locals! I’ll be enrolling in some courses later this year in an attempt to learn to speak Japanese!
